RetroMental: The Sound Of Music Debuts

The Sound Of Music debuted on this day in 1965

I can’t help but think of equestrian clothing everytime I watch this movie, and it’s not like they are riding horses a lot or anything. If I remember correctly, they don’t even ride horses in this movie. Why would I think of that then?

Wrapping Up A Remodel

The wife has finally found the time to finish the master bedroom. I have no idea where she found the time, in between homeschooling the boys, canning all sorts of fruits and vegetables, keeping the house clean, doing the laundry and everything else she does around here on a daily basis.

She started the bedroom “remodel” several months ago, with a simple re-arranging of the furniture, then I had to take some furniture out and bring some other furniture back in. It was a time of great flux. She then decided the walls needed a new coat of paint and actually did all of the painting and trimming herself. She is very talented when it comes to that kind of stuff.

After changing the draperies and a few other items in the room, she finally convinced herself that she needed to look at new duvet covers, and eventually decided on a nice floral print for the bed.

So, now that the remodel is done you’d think she’d be ready for a rest, right? Well, you would be mistaken. She’ll be ready for her next project before the end of the week, and I hear that one involved wood and electric saws.http://www.terrysfabrics.co.uk/cat_printed-duvet-covers.php

Did You Have A Good Day?

Hope you enjoyed your Saturday, I sure did.

We did a bit of spring cleaning (I know, we’re running a bit behind on that one) and took a load of stuff over to Goodwill. Then we came home and Gidget started making apple sauce, a whole bunch of it.

The picture above is apple peels that the birds, butterflies, and yellowjackets were having a field day with.

Now my arms are killing me after processing all those apples through the food mill, so I am going to kick back and watch a movie and eat a snack. Canning food sure makes a guy hungry.

I Am A Clock Watcher

A few years ago I mentioned that my wife purchased a backwards watch for me, as a Christmas gift. I am fascinated by clocks. I always have been. Whether it’s the latest style of watch or a nice clock to hang in my office, I love watching them. Yes. I am a clockwatcher.

This morning, I continued the task of making my Christmas list and I found myself looking at clocks. Talk about finding Nirvana. Whoa… Thay have every kind of clock you can think of, whether it’s grandfather clocks, wall clocks or mantel clocks.

I looked at all of the different clocks, including Seth Thomas Clocks, Kieninger Clocks, and Ridgeway Clocks, but I found an Hermle Astrolabium clock on their site that I would absolutely die for. It has a solid wood base with cherry finish, and sits inside a crystal glass dome. The best part? The gears of the clock reproduce the annual orbit of the earth around the sun, the moon revolving around the earth, and the earth rotating on its axis every 24 hours. I.Want.That.Clock.

While looking at clocks I also found the Clocks Blog, which goes to great lengths to tell you about all sorts of clocks and clock history. I was fascinated by their post about Atomic clocks. I didn’t realize so many companies made them. Each post links back to 1-800-4CLOCKS Grandfather Clocks and much more where you can browse through all of the types of clocks they were talking about on the blog. Very convenient if you ask me.

Needless to say, I added only one item to my Christmas list today, and that was the Hermle Astrolabium that I want, for me. Maybe Santa will read this post and bring it to me?

Taking It To The Streets

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced that approximately 100 volunteer posse and Sheriff’s Deputies will soon begin randomly patrolling the desert areas and main roadways in southwest Maricopa County as a part of an operation to curb the flow of illegal immigrants entering the county.

Arpaio made the announced just as 11 more illegal immigrants were being booked in jail after a Ford Windstar with California plates and 16 people packed inside was stopped by a Sheriff’s deputy early Tuesday morning on a traffic violation near Gila Bend.

“There are so many illegals trying to make it into the county that it’s overwhelming my deputies, so I have called on members of my 3000 member volunteer posse to assist,” says Sheriff Arpaio. “It’s not only illegals we find and arrest out there, we’ve also made some recent huge drug seizures involving illegal aliens including nearly 100 pounds of methamphetamine and approximately three pounds of heroin.”

Posse man Andrew Ramsammy, who was part of Tuesday’s arrest team, says that he believes he represents many of his peers when he says that the posse is anxious to be a part of the Sheriff’s solution to the immigration problem.

Now we’re talking! If more communities along the border did the same thing, we could start nipping this problem in the bud.

The way I look at it, at least someone is doing something about the problem instead of sitting on their ass (pay attention Mr. President).

Now Hiring: More Interns

When I saw this on Expose The Left, I almost spit my soda all over my keyboard.

If you are an undergraduate, graduate or professional student or a recent graduate with your own strong interest in crucial issues of our day, the Clinton Foundation Intern Program offers a unique opportunity for growth, learning and meaningful service. We are looking for people who are dependable, enthusiastic, professional, and intelligent.

Although that paragraph is extremely hilarious, I found the following paragraph even funnier (emphasis mine):

The intern’s semester mirrors that of the school year, with the spring term extending from late January through May, the summer term from June through August, and the fall from September through December. Each location offers intern positions, and is described in more detail below. No matter which branch of the Clinton Foundation you work in, you will experience some similarities between each of the programs:

  • Hands-on experience: Interns have the responsibility of interacting directly with staff, volunteers and Foundation stakeholders, in such activities as communications, development, and scheduling. Through you learn how the Clinton Foundation functions on a daily basis, and assist with this process directly.
  • Helping to accomplish the Clinton Foundation’s goal: In each intern class, we look for candidates who are diligent, resourceful, professional and intellectually curious, as we believe these qualities in our interns reinforce and bring us closer to the Clinton Foundation’s mission of meeting the challenges of global interdependence through our work in HIV, race relations, economic empowerment, leadership development and citizen service.
  • Brown Bag Lunch Series: Each semester, the Clinton Foundation hosts a number of Brown Bag Lunches, where guests, including senior administration officials, and leaders in politics, business, entertainment and journalism discuss issues of the day over an informal lunch.
  • Come one, come all! Here’s your chance to work as an intern for the Clinton Foundation. What’s that you say? No, I don’t think the blue dress is included.

    An Excerpt From Tim Bete

Tim Bete, the author of “In the Beginning…There Were No Diapers“, sent this to me, with permission to post it on my site. So here it is, just for you.

‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS (BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED)
    by Tim Bete

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse; With only six hours left, until morning light, Assembling kids’ presents would take me all night.

19,000 pieces — bolts, washers and screws, To be put together, and me with no clue; All I had for tools were some needle-nose pliers, A Swiss Army Knife and a Phillips screwdriver.

When out on the lawn there arose such a racket, I threw down my pliers and put on my jacket; I swung open the door, to check out the noise, And saw a red-suited man, bringing more toys.

I shouted, “Hey, you on my lawn, what’s the idea!”
As my shrubs were being eaten by eight small reindeer; The big man looked up at me and said with a smile, “There’s more to assemble — it will take you a while.”

“My kids don’t need more toys,” I countered right quick, But he wouldn’t hear “no,” that stubborn Saint Nick; “These new toys have detailed instructions,” he said, And he winked as he lifted a bag from his sled.

Then he pulled a bunch of woodchips out of his bag, “It’s a dollhouse,” he said, as he looked at the tag; “It has 6,000 small pieces, plus one or two, You can make it if you have a gallon of glue.”

“And, there are no axle holes on this toy car, With only two wheels it won’t go very far; Perhaps you can whip up some rubber for tires, I’m sure you can do it before you retire.”

“But Nick,” I pleaded, “don’t you have simple toys?
Can’t they build simply things — those elves you employ?”
“How ’bout a ball, a rag doll or gun that shoots darts, Or some other present made of only one part?”

Santa said, “Those kinds of toys are passé these days, It’s complicated gadgets that are all the craze; So, please take these here toys and I’ll be on my way, I have houses to get to and visits to pay.”

“I don’t want any more toys!” I yelled quite in shock, Then I slammed the door shut and I secured the lock; And I took off my coat and went back to my bench, And tried to read the directions — printed in French.

Then just as I found I was missing a screw, That old coot came sneaking right down through my flue; “You forgot all these toys,” said the man dressed in red, Then he put his sack right down and here’s what he said.

“You’re not alone staying up all through the night, Dads all over the world are in the same plight; They don’t have the right tools, or any instructions, They’re eyes are bleary and they’re minds don’t quite function.”

Then he left me there speechless, alone with my work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk; And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle; But I heard him exclaim, as he jumped in his sleigh, “You’ll need 62 batteries — all triple A.”
