Checkin’ The Stats - April 2008

I can’t believe it’s May already. I thought March went by fast. Where the heck did April go? What a whirlwind month. Our water heater was going out, or so we thought, but a simple check of our warranty, and a call to the repair center, and I had the part in my hand to fix it myself. Total cost? $0. Things are looking up!

Let’s take a look at the stats for April.

The top 10 referring sites for April were:

A Very Simple Upgrade

The WordPress team surprised me this weekend by releasing WordPress 2.5.

Of course, I spent the next 20 minutes upgrading all ten of my blogs. Yes, it only took 20 minutes to upgrade them all and most of that time was spent uploading the upgrade to each of the sites.

The famous 5-minute installation was a breeze, and all of my plugins work flawlessly.

If you have a WordPress blog, you should think about upgrading, like now. 2.5 is a huge change, and you’ll be glad you did it.

On The Web, No One Is Safe

I know that it’s virtually impossible to guarantee such a thing doesn’t happen to websites in general, but when it happens to an anti-virus site it sure puts things in perspective.

Security vendor Trend Micro has fallen victim to a widespread Web attack that splashed malicious software onto hundreds of legitimate Web sites in recent days.

A Trend Micro spokesman confirmed that the company’s site had been hacked Thursday, saying that the attack took place earlier in the week. “A portion of our site– some pages were attacked,” said Mike Sweeny, a Trend Micro spokesman. “We took the pages down overnight Tuesday night– and took corrective action.”

The article states that it looks like they are getting in through ASP pages and then mentions that any number of bugs in the code could allow them in. Duh, ya think?

I bet the execs at Trend Micro are a bit embarassed today, but they’ll get through it. Shit happens. It’s just shittier when it happens to you. When it does happen to you, you better hope you have automatic lighting from a wall sconce, because it can get real deep real fast, and you don’t want to go down that way. Trust me.

Tuesday Train Wreck

If the news about her arrest had arrived sooner I could have made Dawn Wells my Monday Memory, but instead she gets to be this week’s Tuesday Train Wreck.

By now you might have heard she was arrested back in October and it appeared at the time she was under the influence of marijuana.

Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on “Gilligan’s Island,” is serving six months’ unsupervised probation after allegedly being caught with marijuana in her car.

She was sentenced Feb. 29 to five days in jail, fined $410.50 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving.

Under a plea agreement, three misdemeanor counts - driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance - were dropped.

On Oct. 18, Teton County sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Gutierrez arrested Wells as she was driving home from a surprise birthday party that was held for her. According to the sheriff’s office report, Gutierrez pulled Wells over after noticing her swerve and repeatedly speed up and slow down. When Gutierrez asked about a marijuana smell, Wells said she’d just given a ride to three hitchhikers and had dropped them off when they began smoking something. Gutierrez found half-smoked joints and two small cases used to store marijuana.

I am not going to argue whether or not the use of marijuana is a bad thing or not, but I am going to mention that any 69 year old woman who wants to light up, should be allowed too. I just don’t think she should have been driving her car while doing so.

Thanks for the memories, Dawn!

Do You Recognize Anyone?

Every Saturday afternoon I sit here for a couple hours and explore blogs and other sites that I haven’t seen before. I start by clicking one of my favorite blogs and click a random link to someone else’s site. Each week I am amazed at some of the sites I find.

This week, I visited Recognize Anyone. The site is a social experiment to see how small the world really is. I love it. The site simply shows a random photo from a random place on a random day.

I think it would be cool if they posted more photos from random people from random places around the world. Of course I don’t Recognize Anyone in that photo, but then again the odds that I would are very slim. The guy in the blue hat looks like a friend of mine from 20 years ago, but he has a lot more gray hair than that now. Ha!

Take minute and help further the social experiment and see if you Recognize Anyone.

Check Out The New Schtuff!

My wife updated her blog a couple days ago and has been feverishly working to put some of her favorite items online in a gallery.

In addition to the whole new look of the blog and the gallery of some of her works, she has posted pdf files of the original manuals to some of the old sewing machines she has.

She’s also telling stories (which just happen to be true) but I’ll let that slide, for now anyway.

Scoble Talks Integrity

In Robert Scoble’s latest post regarding the whole Gizmodo kerfluffle at CES, he states,

Funny, back in journalism school I was taught that journalists were supposed to report the news, not make it.

But now I guess we’re in a new world of the blogosphere. I call it “the stuntosphere.”

Just for the record, Gizmodo was credentialed at CES as journalists, not bloggers. So the blogosphere has nothing to do with their stupid stunt. Sure, there are a lot of stupid people in the blogosphere, but don’t blame the blogosphere for all the stupid people at Gizmodo.

Robert also says he wants off the “new ethical journalism” bus.

Personally, I think he jumped off the ethical bus a couple weeks ago when he intentionally broke the terms of service at Facebook, but that’s just me.
