John E. Carter Dies

R&B singer John E. (Johnny) Carter, famous for his soulful voice and work with supergroups the Dells and the Flamingos, passed away in his hometown of Harvey, Ill., Thursday evening after a long battle with lung cancer ended his lifelong career in the music industry.

Carter was the last surviving member of the Flamingos, which he left in 1960 to form the Dells with four other friends from his high-school days in Harvey.

He's survived by his five daughters and several grandchildren.
