De-Cluttering And Planning Ahead

Today is a very busy day around our house. We're picking up, sorting, cleaning, and getting ready for the upcoming homeschool year.
One of the lessons the kids are learning is to "de-clutter" at the beginning of each year. I learned long ago that it's best to start de-cluttering early in life because the longer you wait, the harder it gets to go through everything you've got.
Several years ago my grandfather moved into one of those assisted living facilities and I just don't know how he did it. How he went from living in a house with furniture in every room and keepsakes and mementos from a lifetime, and life in a small two room apartment sized unit is beyond me. Then again, the more I think about it, the more I realize he wasn't really the pack-rat type.
Elderly care sure has come a long way in my lifetime. I remember visiting a "senior care" center in my old hometown one time and the horror I felt when I saw the conditions there. Although my grandfather did not stay at the assisted living facility very long, it was a very nice place. It was very much like an apartment complex and people were milling about and participating in activities every time I saw him there.
Now I've got to get back to that basement and carry more stuff up the stairs. I am twice the pack-rat he ever was.
