Michael Burke Dies

Michael F. Burke, 71, a retired Air Force colonel who served on the seven-man research team for President Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, died May 3 of complications from kidney disease at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, N.Y. He was a Burke resident before moving back to Saratoga Springs, his home town, in 2003.
Col. Burke, who served in the Air Force from 1960 to 1989, was a navigator on the C-47 and B-52. Early in his career, he served tours of duty in Marquette, Mich., Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., and Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. He also served in Vietnam.

Col. Burke's first wife, Kathy Kelly Burke, a retired Air Force captain, died in 2000.
Survivors include his wife of three years, Diana Murphy Burke of Saratoga Springs; three daughters from the first marriage, Kate Kurtzke of Ashburn, Chris Samisch of Valrico, Fla., and Kerri-Rose Burke of Arlington County; a stepson from the second marriage, Joseph Murphy of Saratoga Springs; a sister; and eight grandchildren.
