I for one do not like much of anything to do with the stimulus plan, and I applaud any effort to reduce spending by the government, be it federal or state.
Georgia's unemployment rate is already over eight percent, and when the new figures come out this week it is expected to go even higher. That's why the Department of Labor is anxious to take control of $220 million from the President's Stimulus Plan.
But Governor Sonny Perdue says, not so fast. He may not accept that money earmarked for Georgia's unemployed workers.
"If someone offered to give me fifty cents," explained the governor, "and they said I'll give you fifty cents if you give me a dollar. I'd have to think about it."
Georgia's unemployed workers will be getting 25 dollars more per week in benefits, a move Perdue called "a no-brainer." But that money that will drain the department of labor's reserves even faster.
Being one of those unemployed workers who would make $25 more per week if he took the money, I implore him NOT to take it. $100 more per month sounds really good right now. In fact, I could really use the money, but not at the expense of my children, and my children's children.
It won't make enough of a difference to make me forget what President Obama and Congress have done to the future of our nation.
It won't make me forget the fact that in the past month the President and Congress have spent more money than at any other time in our nation's history, and someone has to foot the bill for it.
It won't make employers do more to get people off the unemployment rolls…
So keep it Mr. Obama. Keep every red cent of it. Consider it an investment in my children's future.
