Sidney Wood, the only player to win a Wimbledon championship without having to show up for the final match, died Saturday in West Palm Beach, Fla. Wood, who lived in Palm Beach and Southampton, N.Y., was 97.
His death was announced by his wife, Patricia.
Wood was supposed to face Frank Shields, his Davis Cup teammate and doubles partner, in the Wimbledon men’s singles championship match in 1931. But Shields sprained a knee in his semifinal match. American tennis officials asked him to default in the final, fearing he might aggravate the injury and not be available for a Davis Cup match against Britain two weeks later.
