In 1976 or 1977 I was playing in Tucson, AZ at a Hilton Hotel with my band when I met Richard Wright. It must have been a dark time for him as he was drinking heavily and appeared sad although he tried to hide it. He hung out with us for approximately a week as he was between gigs and wasn't due in Phoenix until the next weekend. Although he seemed to have a shy nature, he was very open to me regarding his personal demons. It was a strange week…not only Richard hung out with the band nightly but there were other well known musicians staying at our hotel who came in and watched us play in the Hilton's show lounge and some sat in with us. We were not a typical show band as we were experimenting with our own rock originals on stage…it was a very good band. As hard as I tried, Richard would not sit in with us even with the encouragement of some of the other well know musicians that were haning out there. I remember having long talks with him about music, trends, different chord inversions he was experimenting with…I never have forgotten that week he hung out with us and I won't go into anymore detail as some of our discussions that were of a personal, private nature. I will say that I've been very lucky to have met, spent time with or played with some of my greatest heros. Rick Wright was one of those splended memories that I will never forget. I always hoped we'd meet up again as he seemed to snap out of the funk he was in at the time. His passing suprisingly saddened me more than I expected it would. He will be missed but his music lives on.
