Hamilton Jordan Dies

Hamilton Jordan, the sharp-witted son of Albany who served President Jimmy Carter as one of the youngest White House chiefs of staff ever, died Tuesday night after a long and valorous battle with cancer.

Former CNN President and friend of the family, Tom Johnson, confirmed the death in an email, reading, "Our dear friend Hamilton Jordan passed away at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. He was comfortable and surrounded by his family. His son Hamilton, Jr. got back home from Europe in time to be with his father."

In addition to his wife, Dorothy, his survived by three children, Hamilton Jr., Kathleen and Alexander; a brother, Lawton Jordan, of Augusta, and a sister, Helen Schroder, of Atlanta.

Johnson said the family is planning on holding a memorial service at The Carter Center. Details are expected to be released later.
