What purpose does this serve?

Is there a team of scientists somewhere in Britain jumping up and down yelling "we did it, we did it?" I just don't get why this has to be done. It amazes me how far people will go to "be on top". It's ridiculous. These people couldn't jump any higher if they were using platform beds.
