Rebuilding Your Credit, One Payment At A Time

While most companies recommend looking at your Free credit report at least once each year, I make sure to order copies of my credit report at least twice per year. Why? Well, it all started back when I was 16 years old, and I went to get my driver's license. I took the written test and then I got behind the wheel for the driving portion. I passed both parts with flying colors, but while I was waiting for my license I was told that I could not get it because I had been convicted of drunk driving in a town 800 miles to the north.
That's right. Someone was using my social security number and had stolen my identity. Well, they didn't call it identity theft back then, but the end result was the same. Thank goodness I was only 16, else I might have had a lot more explaining to do.
Although I have had a couple credit card numbers breached over the years, I haven't had any trouble since then. After my bankruptcy I did take out a couple "bad credit loans" which took forever to pay off, but once I did, my good credit rating started building almost immediately.
I also made sure to get a couple secured credit cards. I used them to purchase gas for my car, and paid the bill every month, which also helped build my credit back up.
With the housing market in the condition it's in, and the economy looking weak, I bet more and more people will be turning to such ways to help rebuild their credit too.
