My Land Is Your Land
Last October when I was driving my mom across country moving her from Las Vegas to the Atlanta area, we drove down Interstate 40 for most of the trip. As we went through Arizona I laughed when I saw the signs for Williams. Williams is not far from the Grand Canyon, and seeing the sign was funny, because at one time, my wife and I were going to buy 40 acres of land out there. We had looked all over the western states for affordable land, and I even contacted some relatives to see if they would let me assume their mortgages, or even get an Idaho Mortgage Refinance. They wouldn’t and it didn’t matter because my wife didn’t want to live in Idaho at the time either.
If either one of us could have found work in the Williams area, I think we might have tried to make a go of it. Needless to say we ended up moving back here to Georgia, but that has not stopped us from looking at good farm properties in other states. For a time we limited our searches to Georgia and the surrounding states, but last year we found some property in Utah and we almost put a deposit on it. It was just before all of the sub-prime fiasco hit the fan, and it looked like we might have trouble getting a Utah Mortgage Loan, so that was the end of that idea.
We’re still searching for the perfect piece of land (5-10 acres) that we can start our very own mini-farm on.
