2,000 Miles Through 8 States In 3 Days
It’s not often that I get time off from work, let alone to relax, but that’s exactly what I did, well, after driving from Las Vegas to Atlanta.
On the 17th, our oldest son and I flew to Las Vegas, to help my mom and sister pack up the last of the their stuff and prepare for their moves back East.
By the afternoon of the 19th, the movers had loaded the last of their stuff, and my mom was ready to start her journey moving across the country. My sister didn’t leave for three more days, and you can read about her journey on her blog.
That first day we didn’t get on the road until 3pm, but we drove all the way from Las Vegas through Arizona all the way to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Most of these pictures were taken by the oldest son, who had a unique perspective on his journey across America.

After a good night’s sleep we drove from Albuquerque, New Mexico through Texas and Oklahoma, to Clarksville, Arkansas.

On the third and final day of our drive, we drove from Clarksville, Arkansas through Tennessee and into Georgia. I found a shortcut coming down I-75 and was able to shave an hour or more off our trip. It was awesome!

We’ve spent the past week relaxing and just enjoying ourselves. The movers should be here this weekend, if everything goes right, and then we’ll get my mom settled into her new place.

Man, just thinking about a trip that long is depressing. When I was a kid we used to go on April school vacation from Vermont to Myrtle Beach, SC every year. It was something like an 18 hour drive (not including stops for food, gas, stretching, etc.)
Even worse (longer) was my move back to Vermont from Tennessee last year… something like 20 hours on the road.
When you’re moving, unless you’re filthy rich, I suppose there’s really no way around it… but unless I’ve got all the time in the world so I can pace myself, I won’t be driving when going on vacation any time in the near future. I don’t care how high plane tix have gotten, it’s worth it to save that time and aggravation.

I drove a similar trip. I moved to Phoenix, Ariz. from Ohio and that drive was just under 1900 miles. 27 hours after my departure i finally made it to the valley of the sun. Once i got out of the midwest and into Northern Texas the scenery made it the best drive that i never want to do again.
