This is a post I wish I could send to my mother without some sort of backlash. Growing up, we were not permitted to celebrate Halloween in any way. Even if the church said "dress up as a Bible character", we were still not permitted to because we were still dressing up. My question is, how is that any different than what my girls do every day when they play dress-up? They pull out their trunk of dress-up clothes, some are bought, some were handed down from me, etc. In fact, as I type this, my youngest is dressed up in her store bought Cinderella dress-up dress, complete with tiara. Does that mean she is susceptable (sp?) to Satan's minions? No. What is means it that she has the healthy imagination of any child to see themselves in a different light, to be able to pretend to be someone or something they are not for just an hour or two. My 9-yr-old likes to play with her little sister, sometimes they place where one is the actually the family dog! Granted she's not wearing a costume, but their imagination takes care of that. Does that mean she's going to Hell? NO!
As with any holiday, a person can twist it and corrupt it to "mean" something totally off the wall. I actually have Jewish friends that will celebrate Christmas. They don't believe that Jesus was the Son of God. They simply thought that Christmas was fun. Does that mean their Jewish beliefs are in a state of corruption? Not at all. Halloween is just another example. We are a family of Born-Again Christians (well, except for my husband – he's agnostic). We celebrate Halloween. I put the decorations up every year with such incredible enthusiasm – ghosts having from the porch and trees, orange plastic pumpkin lights, etc. Every year we invite all of our friends over for a huge pumpking gutting and jack-o-lantern carving party. It is definitely my favorite holiday.
I think any holiday that promotes spending time and having fun with your family, especially your children, shouldn't be shunned just because of some misconstrued ideas of it's origins. Make the holiday what you want to make of it. We choose to make it a time for us to walk the neighborhood with our kids, dress up, use our imaginations, get to know our neighbors, and the kids get some candy out of it. If that is putting my soul and my children's souls in jeapordy, then I'll just pray when I get home and beg God to forgive us our few hours of fun.
there is nothing more intolerant that a SELF-RIGHTEOUS fanatic – regardless of religion.
