Saying GoodBye To FaceBook

Most people with think of this “feature” as a pleasant thing, where everything on the internet is slowly melding together. I, on the other hand, don’t think this is a good idea.

The online hangout Facebook is opening another window to the outside world, letting nonusers for the first time search for members’ personal profile pages.

The company also plans to begin letting Google Inc., Yahoo Inc. and other search companies index portions of Facebook profiles to help nonusers more easily find them.

Facebook, which faced a user rebellion a year ago over privacy concerns, stressed that information available through such searches would be less than what someone could find simply by signing up. Users could choose to remain invisible in such searches.

“We think this will help more people connect and find value from Facebook without exposing any actual profile information or data,” Facebook engineer Philip Fung wrote in a company blog entry.

For one, I don’t think I, as a user at Facebook should be required to keep modifying my privacy settings to keep up with all the changes Facebook decides to make that affects my privacy.

I used Facebook to keep in touch with specific people. I used Facebook to communicate with those people in a way that was separate from the rest of the internets. If I wanted that information (even if it is just a select item or two) exposed to Google or any of the other search engines, I would have entered all of that shit on my blog. I wouldn’t have bothered with Facebook.

Anyway, it’s a mute point for me now, because I de-activated my Facebook account. I see no reason to keep it if I won’t know from one day to the next whether or not they are going to change yet another privacy policy and open it up even more.

My mom joined Facebook a while ago and figured out how to add posts and applications a few days ago. Yesterday, I got nine e-mails from Facebook generated by her, and in my news feeds, there are ten items from her, including three posts and two new applications. Her feed from yesterday is literally longer than my feed from the last month.

“Joe” writes like a low level PR hack paid by whomever company Facebook contracts for blogosphere comment services. A cottage-industry work-at-home type, perhaps.

The effort is to follow up anyone’s criticism of any type with something positive. Need not be relevant. In this case, whatever can be made up that sounds heartwarming enough not to be a lie.

How do we know? It is “distraction writing”. It doesn’t try to address Slobokan’s point. Total disregard. Just heartwarming happy talk… bought and paid for by the latest industry behemoth.

Joe is anything but a “low level PR hack”, in fact, his comment makes much more sense is much closer to the topic at hand than yours.

His comment addresses Facebook and the fact his mother uses it.

Your comment on the other hand does nothing but attack Joe’s comment, which is completely off-topic and not even related to the post.

So what was your point?

i also disabled my account on facebook. I already had a problem with how “easily” people can reach you and leave you messages, other than the fact that you also will recieve lots of unwanted information about ur friends that u dont really want to know…for instance i can see every single person my ex hits on or vice versa….now that they want to even let google and other search engine find and display parts of our profiles…well..its just too much
