Macular Degeneration

We have a friend, Lois, who suffers from macular degeneration. She was told by her doctor, that unless she submitted to a few operatons on her eyes, she would slowly go completely blind.
Macular Degeneration occurs when the cells in the macula, near the center of the retina, start to deteriorate, and her doctors eventually told her that there was no cure for it, just ways to slow it down.
She told us the most annoying part of it, was the "dark circle, or blank spot" in the center of her line of sight. I can only imagine what it would be like to suffer from it.
I found a website tonight that describes steps you can take to actually stabilize macular degeneration and even improve your vision in some cases. One of those steps include eating foods rich in omega-4 fish oil. NaturalEyeCare.com has some great information on the symptoms and causes of macular denegeration as well as conventional and complimentary treatments that are available.

Thanks for the mac degen post. If you are, like I am, a heavy computer user, do check NEC's comments on glaucoma and computer eye syndrome. I've found the free exercises to be helpful – and apparently computer users are the new group of folks most likely to get glaucoma.
