A friend of mine is facing a nasty divorce in Texas. He and his girlfriend never married, and have only been living together for about four years, so it came as a total shock to him. First he didn’t even realize he was married (common law) and now he’s having to look for a good Divorce Lawyer in Dallas.

Many people, including him, believe that there is a set time you must reside together to establish a common law marriage, but that is not true. If a man and woman live together and represent to others that they are married (which apparently they did), it’s a common law marriage. If he finds a good Dallas Texas Divorce Attorney they may be able to help him save the farm so to speak, but things don’t look good.

Like many others, Texas is a “no-fault” divorce state, so his girlfriend doesn’t even have to have a reason, or fault, to file the divorce. She can simply state that they no longer get along, and it’s basically done. Texas is also a community property state, so she’s entitled to half of everything. I feel sorry for the guy. He’s made quite a name for himself over the course of the past four years, and in turn, they have lived quite comfortably. Now he’s going to be spending some cash on his Dallas TX Divorce Lawyer to try and stop her from taking half of everything he has.
