It's about time Ward Churchill was sent on his way.
The University of Colorado Board of Regents voted to fire controversial professor Ward Churchill on Tuesday evening.
The Board of Regents passed a motion to accept the recommendation from CU President Hank Brown to fire Churchill from his position in the Ethnic Studies department.
The measure passed with an 8 to 1 vote. The vote was made just after 5:30 p.m. and Cindy Carlisle was the dissenting vote. The move came after academic committees found in 2006 that Churchill was guilty of academic misconduct, including plagiarism.
Of course, he says he isn't going anywhere and he is going to file suit in Denver District Court. You can bet we'll be hearing more from Mr. Churchill over the next few months. He says that the University regents violated his First Amendment rights. Um. I think former professor Churchill needs to study the U.S. Constitution a bit closer. The First Amendment prohibits the Congress from making any law that prohibits the exercise of, or the abridging of, freedom of speech. I double checked again tonight to make sure, and I can verify that the U.S. Constitution does not prohibit universities from telling their professors what they can and cannot talk about.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Then again, the University of Colorado did not fire him because of what he said, they fired him because of what he did.
University officials concluded he could not be fired for his comments because they were protected by the First Amendment, but they launched an investigation into allegations that he fabricated or falsified his research and plagiarized the work of others.
He copied the work of others and he lied about his research. He better read deep into that Constitution if he thinks it's going to save him now.
