So, What Happened With The Pet Food Recall?

It’s been 130 days since the Menu Foods Pet Food Recall. You do remember the recall don’t you? Thousands of people won’t be forgetting any time soon.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials said they may never know exactly how many dogs and cats died this year from contaminated pet food made in Canada.

About half of the 18,000 consumers who called the FDA reported that a pet had died, USA Today reported Monday.

However, coming up with an accurate death count requires analysis of tissue and blood samples that the FDA doesn’t have.

After announcing a recall of the products made by Menu Foods, the FDA assigned 400 staff members to collect food samples, take consumer reports and monitor the recall effort, the newspaper said.

“The sad truth is that we will probably never know with any confidence the number of animals that fell victim to the pet food poisoning,” FDA spokeswoman Julie Zawisza told USA Today.

Once again, the FDA lets us down. The one agency of our government that was put in place solely to monitor things like this, has no idea how many pets have died from the tainted food and they admit they may never know.

Half of the people who called the FDA reported their animals died, which puts the number close to 9,000. That’s an average of 69 pets PER DAY.

The FDA should be ashamed of the way they handled this recall, and hopefully, in the future, they won’t be so lax, especially if there is a recall of this magnatude that affects people.
