Amnesty Bill II: Daily Roundup For 06/25/2007

Momentum is building against Amnesty Bill II, Mitch McConnell is considering his options, and Senator Jeff Sessions says the bill will likely fail if returned to the floor.

Jon Kyl(R-AZ) might be waivering, Bernie Sanders (I-VT) isn't happy with the present bill, and newly appointed Wyoming Senator Barrrasso will likely vote NO on cloture.

But we can't take any chances.

Mark Krikorian has the numbers, and it appears we have 33 of the 41 necessary votes against cloture.

We have to keep the pressure on the Senate. If we get the votes needed against cloture on Tuesday, it's done. We won. If the cloture vote passes, we have a big uphill battle, because passage of the bill only requires a simple majority, not 60 votes. We must remain vigilant and keep contacting our senators.

President Bush is urging lawmakers to "summon the political courage" to pass this bill. With poll numbers showing an overwhelming number of Americans are unhappy with the President, Congress, and the Amnesty Bill, he's actually asking them to "commit political suicide". Some in the Senate will do and say anything to get this bill passed.

Heck, if you missed it, while ignoring his constituents and almost everyone else in America, Ted Kennedy promises not to let his friends down. His illegal immigrant friends that is.

Even Trent Lott (R-MS) seems to be misplacing his backbone. On Fox News Sunday, Mr. Lott said,

"I'm not committed to voting for the final product. The wheels may come off. But I am committed to trying."

This quite a departure from the statement he made on May 23rd,

“Is the current situation in America with legal and illegal immigration intolerable and unacceptable?” Mr. Lott asked. “Yes. Everybody would agree. Is this bill better than the current law? Without a doubt, yes. Are we going to have another opportunity to do this better next year or the next year? The answer is no. We’ve got to do it. We’ve got to do it as good as we can. We’ve got to do it right now.

If Congress fails to secure the border, it looks like the states will be taking matters into their own hands.

Later today, at 2:15pm, the White House will hold an "Ask the White House" session with U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez. The topic will be the administration's efforts to pass comprehensive immigration reform (aka the Amnesty Bill). Needless to say, it should be interesting.

Don't forget. Tuesday, June 26th is the day. The Senate will attempt to revive Amnesty Bill II by a roll call vote on whether to cut short debate on S.1639 (S.1348 with backroom closed-door negotiated text). If the cloture vote passes, the Senate will only debate those amendments which were agreed upon behind closed doors. So, basically, a YES vote on cloture is the same thing as voting to pass the bill, and AMNESTY.

Unless your senators hear from you, they won't know how you feel about the Amnesty Bill. Please, take a moment out of your day to contact your senators or send them a fax. Urge them to oppose this measure and support enforcing our current immigration laws. When you're done calling them, call the National Republican Senatorial Committee at (202) 675-6000 and let them know you won't support the reelection of any senator who votes for this bill. Then call the Republican National Committee at (202) 863-8500 (option 1) and tell them the same thing. You should also contact the White House and tell the President that, as an American, you do, in fact, know what’s right for America.

Save your country now!
