Amnesty Bill II: Daily Roundup For 06/18/2007
Over at The Corner, they have an update on the step by step procedings that will occur as this bill is re-introduced. Take note of number 5:
The guessing begins at this point - but we expect Reid - with the help and support of certain Republican leadership and the Grand Bargainers - to do something that we believe has never been done in the history of the Senate… he will use an arcane Senate procedure that allows a single amendment to be divisible into many - in this case, into the 20-odd amendments the Grand Bargainers are trying to cobble together to keep 60 votes in support of the bill. Traditionally, that amendment has been used to protect minority rights - but in this case, it will be used to PREVENT the minority from getting additional amendments called up and from being able to fully debate the amendments in question. It is, to our knowledge, unprecedented.
Once again, Michael Chertoff says we need “meaningful immigration reform”. This time he says we’ll be outsourcing our agriculture business because Americans won’t pick lettuce. On the other hand, if we had “meaningful immigration enforcement” and hiring illegal immigrants was not an option, U.S. farmers would be forced to pay a fair wage for picking lettuce and many Americans wouldn’t be in the unemployment lines. Sure, we would pay a bit more for lettuce and other produce, but then again, I’d rather pay a higher price for products than get taken to the bank paying the cost of this “meaningful immigration reform” he speaks of.
Charles Krauthammer has and excellent piece about the border fence up at National Review Online.
Fences work. That’s why people have them around their houses — not because homeowners are unwelcoming, but because they insist that those who wish to come into their domain knock at the front door.
Did you attend a March For America rally this past weekend? There are more scheduled for June 23rd in selected states.
John Hawkins has posted an interview with National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Ensign.
John Hawkins: Sure, I understand. Give me an estimate of how many calls, emails, and faxes that you think the RNSC has received over the immigration issue and maybe what the for and against ratio has been.
John Ensign: The number of calls to our personal offices as well as to the NRSC are overwhelming and they are overwhelmingly against the bill. It’s, I don’t know, …a hundred to one against.
Captain Ed interviewed Sen. Ensign as well.
Michelle Malkin, who is now sporting WordPress at her site, says we should clear the backlogs first. Makes sense to me, especially because the FBI name check backlog stands at 330,000 cases. How in the hell is the DHS supposed to complete (or get enough information) fo Z-Visa applicants within 24 hours, when they can’t even process the ones waiting now?
CNN reports that conservative bloggers are in full revolt.
Some say the immigration bill may not be a done deal, while others aren’t so sure.
Joe at Techography asks, “Who stands to profit more from a blanket amnesty policy as prescribed in the current Amnesty Bill?”
The Ace has evidence that liberals, like Fat Teddy, no longer care about low-wage workers.
Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) is tired of the same old song. She says it’s time for Congress to change its tune and she’s right.
We must not ignore history’s lessons — we must get immigration reform right this time.
Walking tall and carrying a large wallet, just won’t work.
Time is running out people. Unless your senators hear from you, they won’t know how you feel about the Amnesty Bill. Please, take a moment out of your day to contact your senators or send them a fax. Urge them to oppose this measure and support enforcing our current immigration laws. When you’re done calling them, call the National Republican Senatorial Committee at (202) 675-6000 and let them know you won’t support the reelection of any senator who votes for this bill. Then call the Republican National Committee at (202) 863-8500 (option 1) and tell them the same thing. You should also contact the White House and tell the President that, as an American, you do, in fact, know what’s right for America.
