In case you forgot, or hadn’t even heard before now, the cost of sending a first-class letter will go up to 41 cents on Monday.

It will cost a bit more to mail letters and parcels starting Monday. A first-class letter will go up 2 cents to 41 cents.

But there is also some good news — folks will be able to buy “forever” stamps that remain valid regardless of any future increase.

While the new rates take effect Monday, most post offices are closed on Sunday so officials say items dropped in a box that won’t be collected until Monday should have the higher postage on them.

I went to the post office on Wednesday to send a package and mail a letter. The clerk tried to sell me a “forever stamp”. That’s when I realized the deadline was this coming Monday. I told her I would love to buy a book of them, but to send the letter I would need a normal 39 cent stamp. She was miffed. Seriously.

She tried to convince me that “forever stamps” are good now, so I could just use one from the book I was buying. She didn’t seem to understand why anyone would have a problem with that so I asked her why I would want to pay 2 cents more before Monday? She quickly shut her mouth.

I wonder how many “forever stamps” are already on letters today because of people like her?
