The Canadian company that sold tainted pet food blamed for at least 14 pet deaths expanded its product recall Saturday, saying it worried consumers could still find the products on store shelves.

Toronto-based Menu Foods said some of its pet foods, possibly tainted with a toxin used as rat poison, were still being sold.

The company said store owners should remove all of its products, regardless of the production date.

“As a result of reports from the FDA (US Federal Drug Administration) and various media outlets that some recalled lots of ‘cuts and gravy’ style wet pet food remain on store shelves, Menu Foods has asked all retail outlets to immediately remove all impacted varieties of wet pet food posted at www.menufoods.com, regardless of the date code,” the company said in a statement.

This is a very smart move. Removing all of the cans from the shelves will prevent confusion for the consumer, and possibly save more pet lives. Since scientists just discovered aminopterin in th contaminated foods on Friday, it only makes sense to remove all of the cans, just to make sure there is no chance at further instances.

For many people, it’s too late. Some have commented on previous posts here on my site, and my heart goes out to them. We are one of the lucky families who are not feeding our pets any of the affected foods. If you know someone who might be, make sure you fill them in.

    1. I don’t think the recall goes back far enough. My beloved Beagle, Snoopy suddenly got very sick and was hospitalized on 11/08/06. She had diahrea and vomiting. Her bloodwork numbers were through the roof. She died 8 days later of kidney failure. I had been feeding her Iams weight control hard food. It was a shock to lose our pet so suddenly when she had not even been sick. Now looking back I feel that the Iams food I had been feeding was probably tainted. How do I go about reporting this to the FDA or any other party that should be made aware of this?
