Bobby Rosengarden, the versatile jazz drummer and talk show bandleader who played bongos for Harry Belafonte and laid down a beat for Jimi Hendrix during a "Dick Cavett Show" performance, has died, his family confirmed Monday. He was 82.
Rosengarden died Feb. 27 of kidney failure, his wife, Sharon, said.

Rosengarden was born in 1924 in Elgin, Ill., and studied music at the University of Michigan. He made a name for himself on the New York music scene and on television shows.
Besides his wife and son Neil of Cleveland, Ohio, Rosengarden is survived by another son, Mark, of San Rafael, Calif.; a sister, Joan Meyer of Boynton Beach; and four grandchildren.
