Physical evidence, including DNA from blood and fingerprints, will link a convicted sex offender to the abduction and murder of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, a prosecutor told jurors Thursday as the man's trial opened.
John Evander Couey, 48, is accused of sneaking into the Lunsford home the night of Feb. 23, 2005, and abducting Jessica, then raping her and killing her by burying her alive in garbage bags.
Two of the girl's fingers had poked through the plastic, and she was clutching a purple stuffed dolphin that her father had won at a fair.
