Natalie Maines says one of the death threats she received after criticizing President Bush three years ago was “definitely scary” because the sender “had a plan.”

Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, told a London audience during a March 10, 2003, concert: “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.” The comment was made as war was looming with Iraq, and Maines later apologized for the phrasing of her remark.

Her London comment angered many country music fans and caused radio stations to pull Dixie Chicks music from their playlists. The Chicks said they received death threats, leading them to install metal detectors at their shows.

Today, the Chicks refuse to apologize to fans who were upset by Maines’ comment.

“We don’t make decisions based on that,” Maines says. “We don’t go, ‘OK, our fans are in the red states, so I’m going to play a red, white and blue guitar and put on my I Love Bush T-shirt.’

“We’re not like that because we’re not politicians. We’re musicians.”

Wow.

There’s a reason people boycott the Dixie Chicks. There are many reasons the fans have left them singing alone.

Natalie Maines alienated thousands of Dixie Chicks fans across the country. Should she apologize? Would anyone really care? Even if she did apologize, people wouldn’t believe her.

The fans don’t make decisions based on that. They don’t go, ‘OK, Natalie Maines is apologizing, so we should go out and buy the new Dixie Chicks album.’

We’re not like that because we’re not twits. We’re consumers.

  2. To the Canadian-rnrnI’m not s To the Canadian-

I’m not sure why you are on a political rant when the author you are commenting are is also exercising their right to state their opinion. Obviously you have some pretty strong political opinions that you need to express somewhere other than this. The Dixie Chicks are being “persecuted” because they spoke out and blasted the very fans that made them popular, so those fans are “persecuting” them (aka expressing their opinions on her comments directed toward them) by not buying their music. I hope country fans continue to express their opinions and not buy their CDs or tickets to their concerts and country music stations continue to not play their music. If they don’t want to be associated with “rednecks” then they need to peddle their wares else where.

As far as her comments on the President-like all celebrities I take what they say with a grain of salt. In my opinion celebrities do not reside in the real world and their political opinions have little to no affect on mine.

  6. I couldn’t have stated it any I couldn’t have stated it any better than that.

Don’t you love how people try to twist our choices as consumers into “violations of freedom of speech” and “persecution”.

The Dixie Chicks got exactly what they deserved, there’s no twisting that fact.

  7. Why is it that some people fe Why is it that some people feel, we as citizens and consumers have no right to support, listen or buy dixie chicks music. Just like it was there decision to mouth off (which they are still doing), it is our decision to not listen to them, support them, or buy their music. I disagree that the huge backlash on the dixie chicks came completely from maines’s comments on president bush. After that she trashed toby keith, went on national tv with a FUTK shirt, called country music fans racists, rednecks, and told us that our opinions didnt matter because we were stupid, and inadequite to them. Obviously that did matter because we sent them into exile and i hope we continue by not buying their cd which comes out tommorrow. The bottom line is that the dixie chicks are elitists. They think that they are better than their fans the “rednecks” who elevated their careers to the level they were at.

  8. Great. Another Canadian kook Great. Another Canadian kook.

For a country that loves to mock us and our right wing nuts, they sure do have their fair share of nutcases north of the border.

  9. Exactly who is being persecut Exactly who is being persecuted here?

Your comment is just plain idiotic. Natalie Maines is not being persecuted by President Bush, the government of the United States, or anyone else.

She chose to express her own opinion, which she did.

Country music fans chose to express their opinion, which they did by boycotting the Dixie Chicks.

  10. How can anyone, President or How can anyone, President or otherwise, claim Freedom and Democracy, and then Persecute someone for having an opinion different than theirs? She didn’t shoot anyone, or otherwise hurt them – she stated her feelings, and she’s entitled to them! President Bush doesn’t want Democracy – he wants a MONOPOLY! Any country that doesn’t see and do things his way? – Well, we’ll just invade them! Doesn’t matter that the US was one of the leading forces behind creating the U.N. – now that Bush doesn’t like what they’re saying – break the laws the U.S. helped to create! – Protect the environement? – not if it means inconvenience! Bush – clean up your own backyard before looking into others!

  11. The presendency of the United The presendency of the United States whether filled by a Republican or a Democrat should be RESPECTED and for Maines to say Pres. Bush deserves no respect is to insult our country and our history. We should all boycott them and their music. That is our right.

  12. No I am not saying that at al No I am not saying that at all.

Natalie Maines did not express an opinion about public policy.

She made an off the cuff insult to the President of the United States, which offended country music fans.

She has a right to her opinions and a right to state them, but I also have a right, as a consumer, to tell her and the other Dixie Chicks, to go to hell.
