Paul Flaherty Dies

Paul Andrew Flaherty, a co-inventor of the Alta Vista search engine, died unexpectedly on March 16 after collapsing at his Belmont home. He was 42.
Mr. Flaherty was born in 1964 in Milwaukee, and four years later his family moved to Grand Rapids, Minn., where he began his lifelong interest in computers and radio science.

Alta Vista, one of the early programs that allowed users to search the Internet, was created in 1995 while Mr. Flaherty was working for DEC. His wife, Natasha Flaherty, whom he met at Stanford, said Mr. Flaherty wanted to demonstrate the power of DEC business computers.

He is survived by his wife, Natasha Margaret Minenko Flaherty; parents, James and Ruth Flaherty of Fargo, N.D.; and brothers, James and Michael Flaherty of Fargo, Daniel Flaherty of Watertown, S.D., and Dennis Flaherty of Denver.
