Postcards From The Edge… Er… Mecca…

Isn’t it getting ridiculous? Not only are people getting killed over cartoons which depict “He Who They Say Cannot Be Named”, but now they are saying that mosques are off limits. Oh, and Mecca too.

Police in Indian Kashmir fired teargas on Tuesday to disperse hundreds of Muslims protesting the magazine publication of a picture of a playing card showing an image of Mecca, police and witnesses said. They said at least 10 protesters were detained.

More than 400 Muslim youths gathered near Lal Chowk, in the heart of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, shouting “La Ilaha Illallah” (there is no god but Allah) … down with India Today.”

In its latest issue, the weekly published pictures of playing cards, one showing an image of Mecca. The protesters are angry because gambling is forbidden by Islam. Youths pelted police with stones and set fire to copies of the magazine, witnesses said.

This is getting sooo weird. Next thing you know, they will say everyone should always wear blindfolds… Oh wait, I think they already do that in some parts of the world. Here is a recent postcard from the region.

Michelle Malkin has more on all the “no-no’s”. You better pay attention… You never know what will be next.

Chikungunya Fever

The number of people in Mauritius infected with a mosquito-borne disease which is ravaging through the Indian Ocean region has risen to 962 from 341 the previous week, the government said.

“Chikungunya” fever, for which there is no known cure or vaccine, has been spreading through islands off the southeast coast of Africa since January, affecting more than 150,000 people in Reunion, Seychelles and Mauritius.

The disease, first recognised in Tanzania, is marked by high fever and severe rashes, and while most people recover, it is extremely painful.

The World Health Organization says it does not believe the tropical virus is fatal, but health experts say it can weaken the immune system, allowing other deadly diseases to set in.

Around 157,000 cases have been detected on the volcanic French island of Reunion, where health officials say there have been 77 deaths directly or indirectly linked to the virus.

Do You See What I See?

Do you see a precious life worth fighting for? Or do you see a child who should die?

What has our grand world come to when we can do this, and still walk the streets without shame? How can we pretend we are innocent of a great crime? –for are indeed guilty to if we do not protest. And the measure of a society is in how it treats her most defenseless.

Or if you are a child with special needs, is it only if you can manage to never be ill, never show weakness, always be impoving that you will be considered worth having around? When it comes to the difficult times, will your life never be worth fighting for?

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Head on over to Save Charlotte and leave a message of encouragement for Charlotte and her parents.

Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act

My God, what will people think? First we pass a law which requires identification in order to vote, and now we want employers to guarantee their employees are not illegal aliens. Oh, the horror.

The Georgia Legislature is considering a bill aimed at illegal immigrants that would penalize employers who hire them.

The measure would require employers to ensure that anyone they pay, whether as an employee or an independent contractor, is legally able to work, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Employers who do not, would not be able to deduct payments to illegal workers on state income tax returns and would not be eligible for state contracts.

The “Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act” would also make state and local government agencies responsible for verifying the immigration status of anyone applying for public benefits, and set up a system for verifying the status of anyone arrested in the state.

Living in Georgia is beginning to have it’s distinct advantages.

Opponents say most illegals simply want to work and are willing to do hard, low-paying jobs most legal residents won’t do.

Of course, we haven’t really been able to test that theory yet, since illegal aliens have been allowed to work those low-paying jobs. Let’s pass the bill, roll the dice, and find out. What do you say?

Now Hiring: More Interns

When I saw this on Expose The Left, I almost spit my soda all over my keyboard.

If you are an undergraduate, graduate or professional student or a recent graduate with your own strong interest in crucial issues of our day, the Clinton Foundation Intern Program offers a unique opportunity for growth, learning and meaningful service. We are looking for people who are dependable, enthusiastic, professional, and intelligent.

Although that paragraph is extremely hilarious, I found the following paragraph even funnier (emphasis mine):

The intern’s semester mirrors that of the school year, with the spring term extending from late January through May, the summer term from June through August, and the fall from September through December. Each location offers intern positions, and is described in more detail below. No matter which branch of the Clinton Foundation you work in, you will experience some similarities between each of the programs:

  • Hands-on experience: Interns have the responsibility of interacting directly with staff, volunteers and Foundation stakeholders, in such activities as communications, development, and scheduling. Through you learn how the Clinton Foundation functions on a daily basis, and assist with this process directly.
  • Helping to accomplish the Clinton Foundation’s goal: In each intern class, we look for candidates who are diligent, resourceful, professional and intellectually curious, as we believe these qualities in our interns reinforce and bring us closer to the Clinton Foundation’s mission of meeting the challenges of global interdependence through our work in HIV, race relations, economic empowerment, leadership development and citizen service.
  • Brown Bag Lunch Series: Each semester, the Clinton Foundation hosts a number of Brown Bag Lunches, where guests, including senior administration officials, and leaders in politics, business, entertainment and journalism discuss issues of the day over an informal lunch.
  • Come one, come all! Here’s your chance to work as an intern for the Clinton Foundation. What’s that you say? No, I don’t think the blue dress is included.
